Since the mid 70s the visionary Upsetter, the ‘Super Ape’ – Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry - has been running his own punky reggae party, creating a devoted global following, and to satiate the dub-lust of these acolytes comes Sound System Scratch. It’s a selection of rare sound system dub plate mixes drawn from the Black Ark and beyond that delivers enough space ‘n’ bass to shake the walls of Babylon to its foundations. That demand for the initial pressing of this album has proved to be fierce is no big surprise because these tunes, which were skilfully crafted for sound systems in Jamaica, drop us into the studio with Scratch at the mixing desk, fired up and at his most improvisational. The riddims rise and fall ready to crash onto the dance floor like a tsunami! From the opening maelstrom of ‘Dread Dub Plate’ (also available on a 7” single) we are taken on a mind-expanding journey that rinses out riddims featuring Augustus Pablo, Junior Murvin, Bunny & Ricky, Keith Rowe and Carlton Jackson along with a host of originals from Perry himself. There are several excellent version excursions like ‘Locks in Dublight’/ ‘Moonlight Version’ and the unique minimalist dynamics of cuts like ‘Chim Cherie’ (from the legendary Blackboard Jungle session), the cataclysmic ‘Bushweed...’ and the bass driven ‘From Dub Four’ continue to mesmerize decades after they were created.
